Judgement Road (Torpedo Ink #1) – Christine Feehan

I was lucky enough to receive an arc from the publisher for Judgement Road, in return for an honest review. This book will be released on January 30th, 2018 and I highly recommend it!

An outlaw motorcycle club sets up shop next door to Sea Haven in the dangerously sexy new series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

As the enforcer of the Torpedo Ink motorcycle club, Reaper lives for riding and fighting. He’s a stone-cold killer who turns his wrath on those who deserve it. Feelings are a weakness he can’t afford–until a gorgeous bartender gets under his skin…

Near Sea Haven, the small town of Caspar has given Anya Rafferty a new lease on life. And she’s desperate to hold on to her job at the biker bar, even if the scariest member of the club seems to have it out for her. But Reaper’s imposing presence and smoldering looks just ratchet up the heat.

Anya’s touch is everything Reaper doesn’t want–and it brands him to the bone. But when her secrets catch up to her, Reaper will have to choose between Anya and his club–his heart and his soul.

Judgement Road is the first official book in the Torpedo Ink MC series by Christine Feehan. It builds on the world first introduced in the Sea Haven novels (Drake Sisters and the Sisters of the Heart), but could be read as a standalone if you are not familiar with those series.

Judgement Road is everything Feehanistas have come to expect from the Queen of paranormal romance. There is a wonderful balance of main couple / background characters, action, sex, intrigue and sexy alpha bad boys.

The paranormal aspect of this book was toned way down in comparison to the Drakes and Sisters of the heart, to my surprise. This isn’t a criticism, I just expected more knowing that all of the MC members have “extra gifts”. There is some, but the book reads much more like romantic suspense novel than paranormal romance.

Other reviewers have pointed out that Reaper does something really stupid … like REALLY stupid … and that Anya forgives him too easily. I partially agree. I definitely would have liked for him to have to work harder to earn forgiveness. Ms. Feehan has a habit of letting her tortured heroes reveal their sob-story when they are in deep doodoo with the heroine, playing on her emotions to get themselves out of trouble which borders on emotional abuse in some situations. It definitely isn’t playing fair.

However, one of the strongest attributes these heroines share is their compassion and ability to forgive. If those personality traits weren’t at the forefront of their characters, these women could never take on such a damaged hero in the first place, so I am completely willing to let this point go for now, as long as it doesn’t reoccur in every book going forward.

The sex in this book isn’t overly explicit IMHO. There is definitely steam but I felt that the heat was solidly romance-level rather than erotica.

For Feehan aficionados, I am happy to report that the first chapter of Covert Game (her next book) is in the end of Judgement Road!

Tormentor Mine by Anna Zaires

Note: This is the first novel in a new series that is a spin-off of the Twist Me series, but Tormentor Mine CAN be read as a standalone.

tormentor

A new dark romance from New York Times bestseller Anna Zaires

He came to me in the night, a cruel, darkly handsome stranger from the most dangerous corners of Russia. He tormented me and destroyed me, ripping apart my world in his quest for vengeance.

Now he’s back, but he’s no longer after my secrets.

The man who stars in my nightmares wants me.

—                        —                        —

Tormentor Mine is a dark romance novel written by Anna Zaires. The relationship between the two main characters is strained and non-consensual to begin with, but this book does not contain any scenes of rape or sexual violence between the hero and heroine. If you are a fan of the original series, Twist Me, I do not think this book is as dark in comparison.

I wish Tormentor Mine had been longer! I finished in about 3 hours so the most disappointing part of the story for me was that it ended so quickly! I have a bit of a book hangover from Peter and Sara, to say the least. They are my new favourite couple from this author and I cannot wait for the sequel! It hasn’t officially been announced yet, but it is obvious from the ending in TM that one will be written.

I was eagerly anticipating Peter Sokolov and ever since his introduction a couple of years ago, I have wondered at his actions and his backstory. Thankfully the author takes the time to provide all the information I had been hoping to get. And now, when my typical anti-hero romance authors have been going through a drought, I was especially excited to get my hands on a dark new book.

Sara is different from most of the previous heroines that Zaires has written, in that she is highly educated, confident and comfortable in her life. Not that everything is perfect – far from it – but she is a full-fledged OBGYN doctor, a homeowner and just generally seems to have all her shit together (unlike myself).

I like that Peter fell in love with her from afar.  His traumatic life, from childhood all the way up to the present, has created a need in him to possess love, to be fully in control of his woman. But this violent and controlling nature is tempered by fierce protective instincts.

Peter’s wife and son were murdered five years previously and although his marriage was one of convenience, he was affectionate towards this first wife and loved his son fiercely. In his relationship with Sara, he isn’t only protective of her safety or of his position in her life. He respects her intellect and her skills as a doctor, and is proud of her work with mothers and babies.

Peter respects her strength and the inherent emotional vulnerability that he sees in Sara. She is loyal, strong, compassionate and good. The type of good he hasn’t seen much of in his life and these are the main reasons that he decides to insert himself into her life. He has already fallen in love with her, knows he wants her to be his permanently, and also recognizes that his previous actions have left her absolutely terrified of him.

It is kind of cute and romantic – in a decidedly creepy way – that he inserts himself into her life completely against her will, and almost becomes a sort of househusband. During the daytime while she is working at the hospital, or volunteering at a free clinic, he does his super secret “shadow work” as the head of a team of assassins. But every night this run-down, underfed, stressed out, PTSD-suffering doc comes home to a home-cooked, candlelit meal, and is pampered and taken care of. He doesn’t press her for sex until she initiates it, just sleeps with her in his arms so that she can become desensitized to him and learn to trust him.

Peter has the power to abduct and keep Sara anywhere in the world. To keep her exclusively his. He makes sacrifices and undertakes significant risk to stay in her world, so that she can remain close to her family and care for her patients for as long as possible, supporting the work that she does. Sara’s wings may be clipped, but he still wants her to soar as high as possible, within the cage he has created.

I love how Zaires has expanded the original Twist Me world and introduced three new hunks with potential future hero statuses: Yan, Ilya and Anton. This is one book that I would love to see be turned into a movie!

Bourne Movie Number 5

I love the Bourne movies and every couple of months I start googling looking for the newest hints and rumours about the next movie.

Jason and Marie

RIP Marie

RIP Marie

After watching the fourth, and seeing how it took place at the same time as the second and third movies and the introduction of next generation Aaron Cross, I anticipated Bourne and Cross meeting and teaming up in the fifth.

Alas, it does not seem meant to be. That probably means that Rachel Weisz won’t be returning either. I still think that is what we will see in the sixth movie though. I’m stubborn.

So what are the newest rumours for the fifth movie, due to be released late summer 2016? Well, the casting is firming up.

I am very excited to see that Julia Stiles is signed on to bring Nicky Parsons back to life. She is pretty much the only person Bourne even remotely trusts since Marie’s assassination and it will be awesome to see them bring her back in. If you don’t remember, she is currently on the run from the CIA so I wonder if Bourne tracks her down or if she is brought back into the plot another way. I have always wondered what their shared history is and hopefully we will finally figure it out in this installment.

There are also lots of rumours that Viggo Mortensen will be in this movie, as one of the Big Bads pitted against Bourne. I suspect he is going to be another CIA desk jockey like Edward Norton played, because he doesn’t have the body of a field agent anymore.

While I’m on the topic of Mortensen, can we please get a go-ahead on Eastern Promises 2 that doesn’t get cancelled?! Any execs reading my blog??? No? Damn.

Another name, Alicia Vikander, is circling the internet rumour sites as a possible female lead, but there doesn’t seem to be any confirmation.

I haven’t seen any proof either, that Joan Allen reprising her role of Pamela Landy, but based on her importance in the last three films, I anticipate her returning, at least briefly, to the screen.

Likewise, I think that CIA Director Ezra Kramer (played by Scott Glenn), Noah Vosen (David Strathairn) and possibly Colonel Eric Byer (Edward Norton) could be making appearances.

Apparently, this movie will only be about Bourne, not a team up with Aaron Cross, but I hope that Jeremy Renner at least appears at the end of the film, or a Marvel style credits scene, to tease out the sixth. Definitely not holding my breath though, that isn’t Bourne style.
