Decluttering Online

Bored? Quarantined? Procrastination pro? My fellow kindred spirits, join me!

I should be getting ready to move but I don’t want to think out that right now. Too much going on in my head. So instead, I am going to start decluttering online, where I can sit on the couch and watch a movie at the same time. Cue a Mission Impossible marathon.

It is so much easier for me to think clearly when my mind and space is decluttered, so starting with electronics isn’t as nutty as it sounds. Want to come along for the ride? Please do.

Email: Delete unnecessary things in inbox, delete all drafts, do I really need those folders/tags/labels I created ten years ago? Delete your spam / junk and trash, unsubscribe from the many emails you supposedly subscribed to sometime in the past. Any contacts stored that you need to update or remove? Personally, I used to be a leader in Girl Guides of Canada and still had the girls’ parents emails listed in my contacts. Time to shed some unneeded data.

Work Email / Documents: Go through these as well, as company policy allows, but make sure you are doing it on billable time!

Subscriptions: Cancel them. Then go back to your email and delete the cancellation confirmation email.

The Cloud. Amazon Drive. Whatever type of cloud-based data storage system you use, run through the files and photos to see what can be deleted.

Photos: On your phone, on your social media accounts, in any clouds or other digital storage formats… lose what you don’t love.

Apps: Delete any apps that you haven’t used in the last 30 days. Update the remaining apps. For ones like notes or voice memos, see if there are any entries that you are ready to delete. Who doesn’t love to get storage back on their device?!

Junk <Snail> Mail: This is also the perfect time to go through your junk mail pile from the postal service and see who you can call/email to end those deliveries and cut down on paper waste. Any legitimate bills that you can turn to paperless?

Phone: Don’t forget to remove those unnecessary phone contacts, photos, etc while you are doing the steps above!
